THE WORK BEHIND THE BOOKS

From the author’s account.

Coming into the Country

In a letter home written while awaiting the Gelvins, McPhee says his sympathy for their skill and relationship affects his response to the landscape they are altering. Narrator’s own letter-home passage in Book III; the stated sympathies and judgments are his account. · lines 3005–3007
