THE WORK BEHIND THE BOOKS

From the author’s account.

The Hidden Persuaders

In his opening chapter, Packard explains that he concentrates on merchandising because of its investment in the methods under discussion, while also following publicists, fundraisers, politicians and personnel specialists. He describes difficulty obtaining some information, anonymity requests he honored and extensive cooperation from other practitioners. Those relationships help explain both the detail available to the book and its reliance on sources describing their own work.

Packard’s self-account in Chapter1, LF311–315. Miller’s separately credited introduction begins at LF97–99 and carries a 2007 copyright; it is not used as Packard’s account of his reporting. · lines 311–315
