The Amityville Horror

Anson recounts the Lutz family’s alleged experiences during a short residence at an Amityville house associated in the narrative with the DeFeo killings. After a Preface by Reverend John Nicola and a Prologue about public reports, twenty-five numbered, dated chapters follow the move, accumulating disturbances, attempts to obtain help and eventual flight. A parallel strand follows Father Mancuso’s reported illness, fears and conversations with church officials outside the house.

The narrative repeatedly aligns the separate strands through telephone calls, shared times and changing knowledge. Domestic tasks, money worries, weather and family obligations continue alongside the disturbing incidents. Escape is followed by another reported episode elsewhere; an Epilogue and Afterword shift from scene to later investigation, provenance claims and proposed interpretation. The book presents itself as a factual account, but its rhetorical organization does not independently establish the events, witnesses or supernatural explanation.

Preview the family’s flight, then use numbered calendar chapters to accumulate incidents and attempted responses. Intercut the house with the priest’s separate experience, bring their departures into relation, and distinguish the narrative ending from later reports and interpretive apparatus.
